Serdang in the 60s

My earliest memories of my childhood must be the pre school times in early 60s. Readers would by now know that I was born in 1957 and I am the only child born to my parents. Serdang in this context will be The Federal Experimental Station or FES as it was then known as. I was surrounded by government servants and their children. We had a good mix of races then. Of course back then, Indians were the majority or specifically Tamils. My immediate neighbour was at that time Vellasamy who was a time keeper(what ever that meant). His children were Allagapan, Selvi, Sundram, Allagamah and  Appu. Back them most Tamils nicnamed their kids fondly.
On the left of my house, that unit was off and on occupied by Peace corp staff from USA and England. Across from my house, I had a few Malay families and one comes to mind. En Bahaman. At the back was the Chen family who must have lots of green fingers coz the compound was filled with orchids and various types of floering planbts. At the back of their home was a lush vegetable plot filled with some of the best looking organic veges. Oh ya, just a few doors from my house was the Arokiam family who had children about my age.
Thats where I spend my pre teenage free time playing cards, monopoly, catching , police and thieves marbles and top spinning. That plus simple games on saturday mornings such as map reading. That was indeed an interesting game where we all refered to a complex atlas and we took turns asking each of us to look for some small towns , rivers or highlands in countries from all the continents. I guess that really helped me in my interest in Geopgraphy in my secondary school years. Oh and off course kite flying during school holidays and windy season. Back then we made our own kites and used mum's sewing machine threads.

growing up in the 60s

Hi. This is my 1st submission under this title.
It would be a trip down memory lane where you will probably be able to visualise the way it used to be in the 60s and early 70s.
Well, i was born Sangra Narayanan in June 1957. My parents, Balakrishnan and T Rajamma. Both my parents were born in India. Kerala to be precise. Dad worked in the Federal ExperimentaStation in Serdang and of course, we lived in a government quarters. Dad was a typist and mum stayede a housewife even though she had formal teachers training in India before sailing to Malaya aboard the SS Rajula, a steamship that plied regularly between Madras port swethenham and Penang. according to mum, she first stayed at her uncle's place also in serdang. That was the Kurup family in College of agriculture, Serdang. Her cousin, Vatsala moved on to be one of the founder members of the famous temple of fine arts in Brickfields. That will be in another chapter of my thoughts.Thats all for now and i shall continue with my thoughts in a couple of days.
bye .
